In Montmartre: Picasso, Matisse, and the Birth of Modernist Art
Sue Roe
Meeting: Thursday, June 20 @ 6-7:30 PM
Location: Kelly-McKenna Gallery, 1308 Third Avenue, Spring Lake, NJ
Summary: When Pablo Picasso arrived in Paris in 1900, Montmartre was the hub for progressive young artists. Over the next decade, amidst Montmartre’s studios, salons, cafés, and galleries, Picasso joined Henri Matisse, André Derain, Georges Braque, and others in revolutionizing art.
Sue Roe’s book In Montmartre: Picasso, Matisse, and the Birth of Modernist Art blends exceptional scholarship with graceful prose to paint a group portrait of these influential artists. She describes the origins of Fauvism, Cubism, and Futurism, and recounts the stories behind iconic paintings by Picasso and Matisse. Roe shows how Montmartre’s vibrant daily life, mixing artists with acrobats, dancers, and others, fueled artistic experimentation and forged colorful relationships that led to groundbreaking works..
