Saving Michelangelo's Dome: How Three Mathematicians and a Pope Sparked an Architectural Revolution
Wayne Kalayjian
Meeting: Thursday, November 21 @ 6-7:30 PM
Location: Kelly-McKenna Gallery, 1308 Third Avenue, Spring Lake, NJ
Summary: In 1742 the iconic dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, crafted by Michelangelo, suffers cracks that threaten its stability. This architectural marvel, a symbol of Italy and the largest of its kind globally, faces an uncertain future as no one knows how to repair it.
"Saving Michelangelo's Dome" recounts the often overlooked tale of how three mathematicians, called upon by Pope Benedict XIV, come together to prevent disaster. Their innovative ideas lead to a revolution in architecture, showcasing the power of decisive leadership, effective crisis management, and scientific progress in the face of traditional resistance.
Wayne Kalayjian, a Stanford-trained engineer, explores how these new mathematical concepts not only saved the dome, but also laid the groundwork for modern engineering as we know it. Their efforts transformed the architectural landscape, paving the way for future buildings and structures that might never have existed without their ingenuity.
